Enlarging Your Kitchen for Better Use of Space

By: Monica Peña   (@casalinda )

Ever been frustrated with the size of your home’s kitchen or wished for extra features that would help with the flow of what you used the room for?   This homeowner chose to add 160 square feet to their kitchen by knocking down walls and adding a half wall. Gas lines and fresh appliances like vent hood, oven, and stovetop were added.  An extra pot filler faucet was added near cooking area for convenience.  The look was complimented with new backsplash, over the sink window, and flooring.  The spacious more open room is sure to be enjoyed by the family for many years to come.

The Risk of Electronic Pickpocketing Due to RFID Chips

~   Universal Contactless Card Symbol via Wikipedia

 By: Monica Peña   (@casalinda )

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic  fields  to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking which may be read from up to several yards away.  Now more than one third of all credit cards and millions of debit cards have these RFID chips that can be read without your knowledge.

Ways to avoid fallen victim of this technology:

  • Carry these cards in anything metal like a card holder or wrapping in aluminum foil will prevent radio frequency.
  • Tell your bank you do not want RFID on your debit or credit card.

2012 Sierra Denali 2500 4WD Crew Cab

By: Monica Peña   (@casalinda )

Each year, 7 locally owned small businesses and organizations which, within their industries, are consistently high achieving and frequently involved in giving back to their community are recognized at the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Capital of Texas Small Business Awards.  Escobar Construction, LLC was honored to have been awarded the Austin Energy Services Award and as GMC was one of the sponsors, we were thrilled to be given the opportunity to drive a GMC loaner vehicle for seven days.

A couple of our favorite features of the 2012 4WD Sierra Denali 2500 were the smooth acceleration of the transmission and the torque power to pull trailers. The crew cab’s luxury interior was accessorized with heated, leather wrapped and colored-keyed steering wheel, and spacious seating for front plus rear passengers to enjoy. With safety being one of our highest priorities, we were impressed by the rear vision camera with an exclamation that would appear if the back of the truck was getting too close to an object.

Thank-you GMC for being one of the sponsors of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Capital of Texas Small Business Awards.  We will be sure to look at GMC for our next vehicle option.

Sealing Countertops

By: Monica Peña   (@casalinda )

To seal or not to seal?  Some surfaces may need a little more maintenance than others. Liquids penetrate surfaces with pores, causing the potential for stains.  Natural stones and tile countertops (most of all the cement grout) will need penetrating sealer. Latex and epoxy additive grouts are supposed to be more stain resistant, but lighter-colored grout lines tend to show all so sealer is highly recommended.  Granite is by far one of the hardest and most durable materials, but should still be sealed once a year to preserve its original look. Quartz, laminate, and solid surfaces do not need sealers for the most part.
